Hey Guys,

I've been in the market for a 06-08 Forester XT for a few months. I recently came across two '07 Sports models (pretty good condition, each around 75k miles) which were both listed for around 19k. Does anyone else think this is absurd? I understand that they are somewhat rare in the pacific NW but KBB for the car is around 14k. I'm pretty keen on the 06-08 FXT so do I just need to bite the bullet and pay the premium for "rarity"? Or if I wait long enough do you think I will find someone asking a sensible price?

The "rarity" premium usually only applies to the '07 & '08 Sports models with manual transmission because they're extremely hard to find (only a couple of hundred were ever produced). If you can deal with a Limited model and/or automatic transmission you should be able to find much more reasonable prices.

The 5MT may be more rare, but a manual limited is easier to convert to a sports than a 4EAT (true in 07 at least)

In 07 the FXT Sports added:

Sports bumper
Sports grill
Anthracite cloth seats
Spoiler
Automatic transmission with VDC and a VTD center diff

In 08 the FXT Sports added:

Sports bumper
Sports grill
Anthracite cloth seats
Spoiler
Blacked out headlights
Blacked out tail lights
Same 4eat with VDC and VTD as 07, but the 08 limited now has it as well.

If you're getting a manual just get a limited, you can convert easily for less than $5k (quite a bit less).

If you're getting an auto, splurge for the real deal or get an 08 Limited and convert the other bits for less.

Of course there is also one other consideration, I think World Rally Blue was only available in the Sports models.

I did an autotrader search for an '07 or '08 Sports XT, any distance from me & there was only one. :icon_eek:

I'm pretty sure I overpaid when I bought my '07 FSXT in '09 with a bit over 21k miles on it. It was a retirement gift to myself & it makes me smile everytime I drive it!

Oh, I almost forgot, the 08s got the STi wheels as well, those as really hard to come by, so they might be costly.

I see... Thanks for the info guys. So the sports and the limited are only different in aesthetics? If that's the case I think I'll wait for a limited because I don't really have much of a preference when it comes to looks (I am pretty set on a 5mt though)

Does anyone know how to find out what # they might have based on their VIN? Eventhough they were not really #'d, thought it was worth a shot to ask.

Still love my 2007 XT Sports (wrb) w/ a Manual, even if it has 60k miles and is 6.5 years old!

Not entirely cosmetic... there are differences in features and the AWD system between the Sports and the Limited models too, depending on year and transmission type. You can find the details here:

2007 Subaru Forester prices, options, colors, specs, images and more
tl;dr: '07 XT Sport gets VTD and VDC over the Limited; does not get cold weather package, fog lights, or power driver seat

2008 Subaru Forester prices, options, colors, specs, images and more
tl;dr: '08 XT Sport gets VTD, VDC (with 4EAT only), but no roof cross bars, cold weather package, fog lights or power driver seat

I'm 95% positive VDC and VTD has only been available in automatic transmissions, not 5MTs have it.

So, if the OP is looking only for a 5MT, then look for a limited, it comes with more features. For a 5MT, all of the differences are cosmetic.

Limited gets the heated seats and mirrors (windshield too, but maybe Sports got that as well), fog lights and leather. Sports gets the boat-anchor wheels, blacked-out tail lights and different bumper with no fogs, and different grille. Get the limited, bumper and grille are easy to switch if you really want the look.

'07 Sports only got a couple of options of the '08 Sports, so even less reason for it. '07 Limited would be cheaper because it's older also, it should cost around 12K for a nice one.

The '07 Sports differ in that it was standard on both the 5MT and 4EAT.

This I will disagree with, cars101 has it wrong for 2007. In 2007, VDC is only on the 4EAT Sports XTs.

cars101.com is not perfect, I recently got bitten by incorrect gear ratios listed on there for the 06 Impreza STi.

If you go through opposedforces.com you see on the 07-08 4EAT XT Sports you have all the VDC stuff: yaw rate sensor, steering angle sensor, VDC command module.

If you go through the 07-08 5MT XT Sports you see that neither year have any VDC components listed for it.

As far as VTD goes, once again you can go through opposedforces to prove it, but that is a bit tedious and there are like 30 unique parts associated with it. Or you can think this through a little more, a VTD center diff needs a controller, what is that controller? The TCU! No 5MTs have a TCU, thus no VTD center diff.

After doing a quick search on the forum, it does seem as though the 2007 Forester cars101.com page has caused some confusion on more than one occasion.

True... you have a point there. We do have to remember cars101 isn't always correct.

One thing is for sure, the FXT is not going to be getting more plentiful as time goes on. As long as you are happy with what you pay I don't see the big deal in price tag, someone somewhere will always claim a better deal. If you can live with the price and you love the car what difference does it make. Good luck with your search.

This is what I know to be true.

2007 Sports were offered in 3 colors, WRB, UGM and OPB. 500 of each color was made in 2007 and 325 of those were autos. The auto was the 1st year for VDC and and the manual did not have this. The 07 also had heated seats but no heated mirrors or wipers.

2008 offered 5 main colors with a few rare UGM FSXTs out there. Colors were WRB, GRP, AWP, DGM and OBP. From what I have seen 1500 of each color were made in 2008 but this includes the Non Turbo version of the Sports. No heated seats but you got the wheel upgrade, black headlights and tail lights and a wing with the 3rd brake light vs in the window.

I can confirm (2) 2007 FSXT in UGM manual with no VDC and I owned 2 of the 2007 4eat Fozzys.

To convert a 2006 you need the bumper cover, side vents and fender liners. This can easily be done in your driveway after paint costs for less than $1,000. Black the headlights out yourself and buy black tails for $300 new and all it done. The downside to a 2006 is the funky passenger seat weight sensor.
