CarWow Races The New Audi S3 Vs BMW M135i Vs Mercedes-AMG A35

These upper-crust hot hatches are remarkably similar on paper. How close are they are they on a (wet) strip?

While the American automotive public focuses on escalating off-roaders emerging from Detroit almost on a weekly basis, the battle for hot-hatch and station-wagon supremacy in Europe seems to be hitting full swing. Audi just released the new S3 hatch—only the sedan version will ship to the United States, sadly—which means it's ready to make the rounds and proves its mettle against an impressive lineup within a market segment that seems to be hit-and-miss on these shores. Mat Watson, host of the UK-based YouTube channel CarWow, recently got his hands on the new S3 and pitted it against a BMW M135i and a Mercedes-AMG A35 for a series of races on a slippery day in England.

Three Apples In A Barrel

All three cars roll up to the line with relatively similar specs. All employ turbocharged four-cylinder engines displacing 2.0 liters and mated to automatic transmissions, plus all-wheel-drive systems. All hail from Germany, the horsepower and torque specs hover around the same levels, and they are all within 110 pounds of each other! Obviously, the beautiful British weather makes traction an even greater concern than usual for this competition which begs the subject of tire choice, which is unfortunately not divulged.

To be specific, Watson claims the S3 pumps out 310 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, employing a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a launch control system. The M135i, meanwhile, produces 306 horsepower but a stouter 332 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed torque-converting gearbox equipped with launch control.

The A35 hatch, meanwhile, sports the bottom-barrel power figures of the group, matching the BMW's 306 ponies and the Audi's 295 lb-ft of twist, with a seven-speed dual-clutch also with launch control. Watch the clip to see which German hatch manages to get a launch off the line—plenty of exhaust burble here, but as mentioned, no mention of rubber choice.
