Hi guys, I am wondering??? Just how fast has anybody REALLY ever gone on a klr? Now we all know it's no "sport bike", but I have a friend who's curious about this elusive top speed. I have had mine over a hundred a few times but know the bike wasn't really made for this. However, I know there are those of us who like to "test the limits". So, with that in mind lets see what kind of top speeds these little babies have done! Appreciate your feed back, Thanks.....
One of the guys in our group used to bring his KLR on sportbike rides. His would do 105. IIRC, it had a pipe and jet kit.
I've seen 89.4 on my gps (~95 indicated) and while it had a little more left, I highly doubt it'll go 105.
105 mph indicated with the wind at my back. That's all she had. Conversely with a stiff wind at my face it has trouble making 85 mph.
There's a similar discussion going on currently on the "KLR Sprockets" post. I had my '01 with air box, air filter, jetting, and pipe mods do 104 mph by GPS with stock gearing. This current '01 seems to run better than the '88 model I had with almost identical mods. A riding buddy has an '02 model with almost identical mods, and he can't reach 100...and I always edge him out in roll-ons and from a stop. I don't think his is jetted just right. Should I tell him? Obviously not all identical bikes produce identical performance, but I doubt many properly functioning KLRs are much different as long as the mods are similar. I also tend to think that proper jetting and other setup can be the cause of many of the disparities we hear between bikes. I even wonder sometimes if there's a slight benefit in a non-o-ring chain for acceleration or top speed. I tried a high quality non-o-ring version this last go-around on mine, and the darned thing sure does spin freely on my bike stand by a very noticeable margin compared to all the o-ring models I've had. I'm not a mud rider, so it'll be interesting to see how it lasts. Oh BTW...doing that 104 mph was not pleasant. A KLR gets pretty darned funky as you approach 100.
After an all day very dusty off road ride today, I had the throttle pinned all the way, and wow, i reached 60 mph on the flat roads and struggled on hills... my air filter was choked.. The question isn't how fast can the KLR go, it's how fast can it stop :eek1
I have hit 115mph indicated, so maybe 105 actual. Like already said, like bikes can run very different. Mine is jetted pretty spot on.
90 indicated tho there was a lil more there. road was dead flat. this bike dont cry to be ridden at 90, my valk i/s bagger feels way better at 125. and without the feeling that the piston is about to come up thru the seat and whack me in the nutz.
The KLR650's top end is limited by gearing. At 100 mph actual with stock gearing it is turning about 7,300 rpm. Peak hp is at 6,500 rpm. I have a '01 with 15/38 gearing (15/43 is stock) and it will do 100 mph true on flat ground with no tailwind.
Interesting you say that. My top end run, 103 mph indicated, was at 6500 rpm indicated. I run a slightly larger rear tire (130/80 Shinko).
I've seen over 100 mph a number of times on mine (GPS). Two key factors from what I've seen is wind (duh) an aerodynamics (duh again ) I've tested mine with an without saddlebags and that was over 5 mph difference. Tuck in behind the windshield, you'll get more again. If you REALLY want to see what your KLR will do, test it opposite directions back to back, a slight head or tailwind makes a big difference. After I did my 685 kit, I tested this way on a relatively calm day, with a slight breeze. Well, it must have been a 3 mph headwind, as I went 6 mph faster returning. I suspect this may have somthing to due with discrepencies in top speed. But back to the real world of riding, triple digit speeds on the KLR is pretty useless (although fun) to me as it takes so much real estate to achieve.
is 104 with a slight tail wind. gps speed. I was maxed and I do mean maxed out on my Dakar and the KLR behind me was right with me maxed out. this way for apx 2 miles. I was a touch faster like maybe 20 feet in two miles. Great fun just to see what was possible. Ain't riding fun!/?
Holycaveman, what if any "mods" do you have in the way of say... aftermarket pipe, header & air filter??? My buddy says he can do 110 - 115 on his bone stock 06' klr while my 06' was struggling to hit 105 or so with a Big Gun pipe and header has the jetting done and a K&N to boot:huh ? What gives??? I'd be curious to know your "jetting" specs if you don't mind? Inquiring minds want to know??? And for all new replies, it'd be nice to know what mods anybody does or doesn't have at their respective "top speeds".... Thanks to all
Well I tried that whole airbox mod, shim needle thingy, before I even had Internet. My KLR ran worse. I then covered back up the airbox, installed a k&N filter, and ran stock needle with two sizes leaner main. Dynoed my KLR only to find that I was still way too rich. Went two more sizes down on main jet. Seems to run strong especially in the 6500 rpm range. Note that not all like bikes are the same. I ran 115mph(indicated)(dynoed at 37hp, with two sizes down on the main. Have not done a top speed test since I leaned it out more. I assume by how its running that I could beat my past mph. Never know, I might just try it out?
Gosh, you guys are doing well! Mine didn't have a top speed fitted, it just goes 100 - 110km/h (65-70mph) 5 days-a-week and weekends. Should I get a Factory Top Speed or are after-market ones ok? :huh
